10th September by
Kim Neal gathered from LABEN newsletter dtd 9/98
The breeze is still cool and refreshing
As it dances exotically with the coconut trees
Limbs gyrating to the punta beat
While the sun warms the Belizean street
Shadows creep from within parked cars
And rhythmically find the blaring trucks
Alive! Look alive! No need for shade
This is the 10th of September parade
Young girls bare their tight tummies
Supple legs peek from under butterfly wings
The marching band falls into line
A crowd of revelers spiritedly stepping behind
A proud smile and a regal wave
A bevy of beauties adorn her float
Here comes our beautiful Queen of the Bay
The jewel in the crown for this historic day
The Prime Minister and his cabinet too
Government by, for and with the people
We all celebrate in our own unique way
The Baymen, Garifuna, Maya, Creole-this is
our National Day.
